January 2, Happy New Year Edition

This is the early front runner for greatest event flyer of 2019

This week’s Curator: Kishore Hari of Big Screen Science

Resolutions suck. They just do. They don’t work (thanks, science), they’ve spawned an industry of people to make you believe they do, and they’ll cost you a fair penny.  But when has science ever stopped me from doing what I want? This year, I’m making only one resolution and I hope you join me.

In 2019, I resolve to go to more events. Whether it be a physics colloquium at SLAC or a wrestling event in Oakland, I’ll say yes to more live gatherings, turning strangers into friends, and expanding my horizon a neuron or two. The Bay Area is a weird, eclectic place, packed with events and gatherings – why not enjoy it to its fullest? As the founder of Manny’s Place in the Mission put it in the Chronicle this past week, “Show up. Go to real, live civic programming. Discuss the news with your friends, don’t just post about it. Ask questions”.

That’s a resolution I can get behind. Heres to a great year ahead. And who am I to argue with Steph Curry, who is getting in on the act too?

Thanks for reading The Anglerfish! We’re also on @ & FB. Please subscribe and help us reach more people in 02019: tell your curious-er friends about us via social media or by whispering in their ears.

COMING UP THIS WEEK:

After Dark: Resolution
UCSF scientists invade the Exploratorium – showing off winning images from their microscopy contest, Dr. Elissa Epel talks about work on stress, plus play around with the amazing paper based Foldscope while checking out the more powerful microscopes in their lab.
THU JAN 3 6PM to 10PM; Exploratorium, SF, 18+, $20

The Bay Area Pun-Off
Celebrate the lowest form of comedy as punslingers will battle fellow punsters in lightning rounds of freestyle punning. First timers are welcome as well, but this is a pun-ishing night of relentless punnery. That’s about as many times as I can fit the word pun into three sentences, end punctuation.
FRI JAN 4 7PM to 10PM; Haight Street Art Center, SF, $16

The San Francisco Mix Tape Festival
Somewhere, deep in a landfill, is a treasure trove of early 90s metal mixtape creations. They weren’t good, both in terms of the music and composition, but they were uniquely my creations. While there is no good reason to unearth those gems, the SF mix tape festival does feature 40+ composition, all designed to be heard on tape. Classic, modern, historical, weird – its going to be a weird amalgam of sounds. Starlord has nothing on these sweet sweet mixes.
FRI JAN 4 – SUN JAN 6; Victoria Theater, SF, $20

MycoMarin – Fungus Festival
Celebrate the new year with some tasty, tasty decomposition. Visit booth after booth of mycological marvels – some tasty, some beautiful, some, we’ll call it medicinal. This family friendly event will introduce you to local mushrooms, foraging expeditions, and even how to identify the good from the downright deadly.
SAT JAN 5 10AM to 5PM; Mill Valley Golf Clubhouse, Mill Valley, $10

SF Neon Walking Tour – Chinatown edition
Take a deep dive into the world of vintage neon decorating bits and pieces of Chinatown stores, signs, and rooftops. Tour includes some of the oldest signs in the city and although they may no longer light up, it is like a treasure hunt to discover these beautiful signs hidden in plain sight. Can’t recommend this enough!
SAT JAN 5 4PM to 530PM; Meet at Chinatown YMCA, SF, $25

Ice on Ice: An Ice Capade in 60 Acts
As a former ice hockey player, there is a weird way the smells on an ice rink feel at home. The crisp air mixed with a bit of zamboni exhaust, the wet dog odor of hockey equipment, and the wiff of scalding hot vending machine coffee. It sounds awful – but its amazing. And no better time to get to an ice rink than this Saturday for the the free Ice on Ice Capades – 60 different acts in 60 minutes featuring amateur and professional skaters alike, topped off by a ice based Rube Goldberg machine. What could go wrong?
SAT JAN 5 715PM to 815 PM; Oakland Ice Center, Oakland, FREE

Sixth Annual Emperor Norton Memorial Walk
On January 8, 1880, Emperor Norton walked out of the Eureka Lodgings boarding house and into immortality. Join this annual walk to retrace his final steps, this year sponsored by the Emperor Norton Legacy League, a new group dedicated to preserving the life and times of the United States’ first and only emperor. I wonder how we would have done with rank choice voting.
TUE JAN 8 745PM to 930 PM; Empire Park, SF, FREE

Ars Technica Live: Personal Data
The Cambridge Analytica scandal. Data breaches at hotels, banks, rideshare companies, and hospitals. Facial recognition. DNA databases. Join Anglerfishian Annalee Newitz and Cyrus Farivar as they discuss the personal data apocalypse with Ashkan Soltani, an independent researcher and technologist who authored the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018.
WED JAN 9 7PM to 830PM; Eli’s Mile High Club, Oakland, FREE
